So Local Pasco Podcast, March 29th, 2016. NPR Drum Circle, REAL Waters of Pasco Edition

It sounds so inviting:  “Crystal Lagoon coming to Pasco County”.  It’s beautiful.  I mean…Look at it!

Looks good, right? I mean...Look at the rendering of our local mountains, in the background!

Too bad it is fake, sterile, and not for you.  Unless, of course, you buy one of the 1500 homes, which will run to $200,000.  It’ll be a gated, PRIVATE lagoon.  But the pictures sure are pretty!  I won’t even link to it…You can find the article all over Facebook, or on Bay News 9.

Meanwhile, in the REAL Pasco County, we struggle to RE-develop the last abandoned boom…The west side of Pasco County.  We can’t get a permit to extend a CRITICAL evacuation route (Moon Lake Road to the Veteran’s Expressway) from the Army Corps of Engineers…But, hey!  We can get one to build a lagoon that will use our critical water resources for a $100 MILLION dollar private development.

Awesome.

Here’s a newsflash:  We ALREADY HAVE a sandy, freshwater beach, in Pasco County, at Sunwest Park in Hudson.  Frankly, I’m skeptical about all THAT development has in store, except that it is being planned on land that has ALREADY been mined.  It is a RE use project, that does not divert water away from our needs, here in Pasco County.  We have water restrictions nearly every year…And continue to pump away OUR fresh water to feed greedy lawns in other counties.  Is this development a good idea?

Who benefits, aside from wealthy home buyers, and the development company?

We sit next to an amazing marine ecosystem…Home to THOUSANDS of species, including manatees, dolphins, sea turtles…So who is excited about this sterile, PRIVATE crystal lagoon?

Not me.

Interview today with our friend Laura Sherrod Pence, who would like YOU to wander to the riverside, and join the New Port Richey Community Drum Circle, at Gill Dawg.  Come on out…See the REAL waters of Pasco County.
